Stop using mercury thermometers

Even though those mercury thermometers have been banned for 10 years, you may still own one of them. In this case, be very cautious: if it breaks, carefully collect mercury and put it in a hermetically closed box. Then give the box to your chemist. Mercury is extremely toxic indeed. In any case, why don't you use a digital thermometer??
